If you’re considering a visit to Texas, March could be the ideal time of year. Typically during the first weekend in March, temperatures range from a low of 50 degrees to highs in the low 70s. This is just when the foliage begins to revive and bloom under clear blue skies and the first wildflowers begin to dot the landscape.
Because Houston (the 4th largest US city) is on the race route, San Antonio (eighth largest) is just 70 miles west of the start, and Austin (the state capitol) is 58 miles north of the start, this race at least warrants an extended weekend visit. Further, accommodations are relatively inexpensive. So, perhaps this event should be prefaced with (or have the addendum of) a vacation with your family! Hey, you need some time to gear-up or recover, right!? And, with the family vacation, you get to run a terrific event while spending hardly any running capital – now that’s a DEAL!
Instead of searching for what you should do during your vacation, the bigger challenge will be determining what doesn’t make the cut because even a week is nowhere near enough time. Houston has a very healthy array of museums to peruse with the NASA Space Center being near the top. It has a grand assortment of parks, theaters, sport outings, tours,
restaurants, shopping excursions… you name it, and Houston’s got several. San Antonio is best known for its beautiful Paseo del Rio (Riverwalk) where you can stroll right downtown amidst numerous cafes and boutiques. In addition, the Alamo is literally just a few steps away. On top of all this, San Antonio also has the activities to match any town. Austin is home of the Texas Capitol (not that Texans keep track of such things, but it is taller than the U.S. Capitol) and The University of Texas at Austin. It has a vibrant running community with plenty of green space.
Texas isn’t just home to some of the most appealing cosmopolitan areas. It’s a big state, claiming over 1,400 smaller towns. While usually offering more space in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, these communities contribute their own individual seasoning, rounding out the Texas experience.
Whether you’re from California (or… what the heck, even New York City!) or just haven’t spent all the time you’d like to explore all that your home state offers, Texas invites you! Can you hear it…It’s calling out, “Come and take the Texas Independence Relay!”
