TIR Accommodations!

If you haven't already, it's about time to start making accommodation plans. We recommend that you recognize Texas Independence weekend appropriately by making a long weekend out of it!

Friday, March 6th

Come visit Gonzales before the race and take part in the TIP (Texas Independence Party - pasta dinner with party afterwards) with your team on Friday evening. You'll have enough hurrying up to do in the race - you won't want to have to rush to the start before it even begins! Also, if you anticipate an early start (those teams who anticipate an overall mile pace between 9:00 and 10:15), you will likely want to find lodging in or near Gonzales on Friday night. Below is a listing of the towns nearby that have lodging. The links are to the lodging pages of the Chamber of Commerce sites of the towns you will be running through. We ask that you consider them first!

Gonzales!
Shiner - 18 miles east of the start
Moulton - 20 miles
Flatonia – 27 miles
Schulenburg – 40 miles
Weimar – 47 miles
Columbus – 62 miles

Other towns that have lodging include:

Luling - 17 miles north of Gonzales
Lockhart - 30 miles north
Seguin - 32 miles west
Yoakum - 27 miles south
San Marcos - 40 miles northwest

If you would like to go to the party, but also stay in Gonzales (which is all booked!), you may also bring your sleeping bag and pillow and stay in the Jr High School which is right next to the start and within walking distance from the TIP! A loud 6AM wake-up cannon blast will be provided just for you! (A modest donation just to cover costs is suggested.)

Saturday, March 7th

You most likely will NOT be getting a lot of sleep on Saturday night. Also, in order to minimize congestion, teams will be required to only have one vehicle at exchanges 18-22 and 24-27. So, that makes Wallis (exchange 23) THE place where teams will swap active to resting vans.

Wallis will be opening up their Brazos Jr High school just like last year, which is just a couple of miles from the exchange and right on the course (same place as last year)! There will be a nominal fee of $5/person to stay in the new facility, which will be going towards a local cause, such as an area soup kitchen that they are planning to get started. We will be fleshing out more details soon, but I believe they will be providing coffee as well. Bringing sleeping bags along and staying in Wallis is what we definitely recommend.

Other alternatives would include finding hotel rooms (Sealy, Katy, or Rosenberg) for a very brief stay, or sleeping in the vans. The former will add to your logistical complexity (and will cost more), and the latter may be a little more uncomfortable.

Sunday, March 8th

On Sunday evening, you'll be able to relax and celebrate... Or, more likely, you'll do a leetle bit of celebrating and a bit more of the sleeping! Our host hotel in downtown Houston for 2009 is the Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston! The Crowne Plaza is located on Smith Street, just a couple of blocks southwest of Exchange 35 in the heart of Houston.

The rate for a room with 2 doubles (or one King-sized bed) is $99 (a good price!). To make reservations (which should be done by February 21 as they will be releasing our rooms to the public at that time), simply call 713.739.8800 ext 44, and let them know that you are exclusive members of the legendary Texas Independence Relay. Or, you can book them online by clicking on this link - SIGN OUR TEAM UP for the Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston!
